Unlimited Bliss - Being Able to Enjoy Spiritually
The desire for enjoyment is natural to every living entity, but Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that in our current conditioned state, we are not actually able to enjoy. Material life is compared to a disease that dulls the senses and makes true happiness impossible. Just as a man suffering from fever cannot enjoy a feast, a soul covered by the material body cannot experience real pleasure. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement teaches that by curing the senses through purification, one can regain their original healthy state and be able to enjoy unlimited transcendental bliss.
Limitation of Material Enjoyment
Śrīla Prabhupāda points out the stark reality that material enjoyment is always checked by death and suffering. We may build skyscrapers, accumulate wealth, or establish large families, but there is no guarantee that we will be able to enjoy them. Death can strike at any moment, stripping us of everything. Furthermore, trying to enjoy God's property without acknowledging Him—like Rāvaṇa trying to enjoy Sītā—leads not to happiness, but to ruin. Therefore, the attempt to enjoy in the material world is ultimately a false and frustrating endeavor.
- First of all, you have to die. You may manufacture some so-called ananda, but you'll die. Now, suppose we are dancing here, and if we understand that immediately death will take place, then we shall not be able to enjoy the dancing.
- They are constructing big, big roads, motorcars, and skyscraper building, but there is no assurance that you'll be able to enjoy it.
- Ravana even dared kidnap Sita, who was both the wife of Lord Ramacandra and the goddess of fortune, thinking that he would be able to enjoy the pleasure potency of the Lord. But actually, by such action, Ravana became vidhvamsita, or ruined.
Disease Analogy
A central theme in Śrīla Prabhupāda's teaching is that material existence is a diseased condition. A diseased man cannot enjoy life; his so-called enjoyment is merely a reflection of his illness. To be able to enjoy, one must first be cured. The process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the medicine. Unlike ordinary medicine which cures a man just to let him enjoy his senses again materially, this spiritual medicine cures the disease of material entanglement itself, allowing the soul to experience the healthy life of eternity, knowledge, and bliss.
- A diseased man cannot enjoy life; his enjoyment of life is a false enjoyment. But when he is cured and is healthy, then he is able to enjoy.
- We living entities, or, say, human beings, we want enjoyment. That's all right. But we are not able to enjoy fully because we are covered by something. This is the thesis.
- You give medicine to a diseased man to cure him just to make him able to enjoy senses. That's all. But Krsna consciousness movement is that you give him medicine so that he can get out of the clutches of this material entanglement.
Purification Leads to Real Enjoyment
To reach the platform where we are truly able to enjoy, we must undergo purification or tapasya. Śrīla Prabhupāda cites the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, explaining that by performing austerities in this life, our existence becomes purified. The result is not suffering, but the ability to enjoy unlimited spiritual happiness. This enjoyment is real because it is connected to the Supreme Lord and is not subject to the flickering nature of the material world.
- In the Srimad-Bhagavatam also it is said: You should undergo penances in this life by which your existence will be purified, and, as a result, you will be able to enjoy unlimited transcendental bliss. (SB 5.5.1).
- So senses should be cured, and then you will be able to enjoy. That is our program. We are not stopping sense enjoyment; we are trying to give you real sense enjoyment.
- When the creeper is fixed, then the fruit of the creeper comes into existence, and the gardener who nourished it is able to enjoy this fruit of love, and his life becomes successful.
Transcendental Enjoyment of Gopīs
The highest example of being able to enjoy is found in the gopīs of Vṛndāvana. Their enjoyment is not physical but transcendental. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that even when Kṛṣṇa was physically absent, the gopīs were able to enjoy His company through strong feelings of separation. This proves that spiritual enjoyment is absolute and independent of material contact. Their pious activities granted them the unique privilege of enjoying the Supreme Personality of Godhead's beauty.
- The lady continued, "We cannot estimate how many pious activities were executed by the damsels of Vrajabhumi so that they were able to enjoy the Supreme Personality of Godhead by looking upon the unparalleled beauty of His transcendental body."
- When Krsna went to the forest with His cowherd boyfriends and cows, the gopis did not physically take part, but their hearts went with Him. And because their hearts went, they were able to enjoy His company through strong feelings of separation.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the quest for enjoyment finds its fulfillment only in spiritual life. As long as we try to imitate Kṛṣṇa in the material world, we will be frustrated. But when we accept the cure of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, our senses become purified, and we become eligible to taste the nectar for which we have always been anxious. As Śrīla Prabhupāda assures, once the disease is cured, we will be able to enjoy a life of eternal bliss and knowledge.
