True Thoughtfulness - From Speculation to Realization
Who is a truly thoughtful man? Is it a scientist, a philosopher, or a poet? Śrīla Prabhupāda redefines the concept of thoughtfulness, moving it beyond mere mental speculation to the realm of spiritual discrimination. A genuinely thoughtful person is one who stops to question the nature of existence, distinguishing the eternal self from the temporary body. While the world sleeps in the darkness of ignorance, the thoughtful man remains awake to the reality of self-realization.
The Mark of a Thoughtful Person
The primary characteristic of a thoughtful person (manīṣī or muni) is the ability to see through the illusion of material life. While the general populace is absorbed in eating, sleeping, defending, and mating, the thoughtful man realizes that these activities are common to animals. He understands that human life is meant for something higher. This introspection leads to the realization of the difference between the body and the soul.
- A learned, thoughtful person must realize that material existence is illusion. This is possible only by self-realization. A self-realized person, who has actually seen the truth, should retire from all material activities.
- The difference between the body and soul can be realized by a person who is thoughtful (manisi or muni), and after this realization of the individual spirit soul one can very easily understand the supreme spirit soul.
- We keep ourselves always healthy and strong in mind & intelligence so that we can distinguish the goal of life from a life full of problems. A thoughtful man must act in this way, learning to distinguish right from wrong, and thus attain the goal of life.
The Trap of Speculation
However, thoughtfulness alone is not enough if it is misdirected. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that many "thoughtful men"—philosophers, scientists, and theorists—become bewildered by their own mental gymnastics. Without the guidance of scripture, they are overwhelmed by contradictory arguments and word jugglery. Their attempts to measure the infinite with a finite mind are doomed to failure.
- Philosophers and other thoughtful persons are overwhelmed by the contradictory manifestations of the physical world and the propositions of logical arguments and judgments.
- Because Philosophers and other thoughtful persons are bewildered by word jugglery and disturbed by the different calculations of the scriptures, their theories cannot touch You (the Lord), who are the ruler and controller of everyone.
- Even if we can travel at that speed (millions of miles in one ten-thousandth of a second) on a spacecraft manufactured by muni-pungavanam, the greatest scientists and most thoughtful men, will that be perfection? No.
Relishing Vedic Literature
To save thoughtful men from the cul-de-sac of speculation, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes the distribution of Vedic literature. Books like the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam are described as the "mature fruit of the desire tree of Vedic literatures," meant specifically to be relished by expert and thoughtful men (rasikā bhuvi bhāvukāḥ). Placing these books in libraries and colleges is a strategic effort to "revolutionize the thinking" of the intelligentsia.
- O expert and thoughtful men, relish Srimad-Bhagavatam, the mature fruit of the desire tree of Vedic literatures. It emanated from the lips of Sri Sukadeva Gosvami.
- Please continue your program for placing these Krsna Consciousness literatures in all the libraries and schools and colleges. I am sure that this will revolutionize the thinking of the thoughtful men of your country as well as the students and professors.
- Krsna consciousness means . . . the simple thing is that you chant Hare Krsna. But if you think yourself as very learned, thoughtful man, and you want to understand through science and philosophy, all right, come on. We have got books. Learn it.
Recognizing Divine Grace
A truly thoughtful person can also recognize the presence of divinity. When they see the transformation in a devotee's character or the extraordinary activities performed in the service of the Lord, they understand that this is not ordinary. They can see that the Supreme Lord is favoring such a devotee. This ability to appreciate spiritual substance over material form is a hallmark of true intelligence.
- A thoughtful man can understand how much a person is favored by the Supreme Lord by seeing his actions.
- When a person exhibits wonderful devotional activities, a thoughtful man understands that Krsna has been more favorable to this devotee.
- According to his position and the time and circumstances, Vrtrasura, the hero among heroes, spoke words that were much to be appreciated by thoughtful men.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda states that thoughtfulness is a prerequisite for spiritual life, but it must be directed toward the Absolute Truth. If one's learning, character, and contemplation do not lead to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, they are ultimately useless—śrama eva hi kevalam. The serious, thoughtful men of the world are invited to examine the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, not just as a religious sentiment, but as a scientific and philosophical necessity for the upliftment of human society.
