True Reality Existing in the Spiritual World
We often judge reality by what we can perceive with our gross senses, thinking this material world to be the all-in-all. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this cosmic manifestation is merely a shadow or a perverted reflection of the true reality existing in the spiritual world. In that eternal abode, life is vibrant, varied, and substantial, whereas here it is fleeting and illusory. To understand the spiritual world is to understand the original prototype of everything we experience here.
Original Substance vs. The Shadow
The varieties we see in the material world—forms, relationships, and activities—are not false, but they are temporary reflections. Śrīla Prabhupāda gives the example of a tree on a riverbank reflected in the water. The reflection looks like the tree, but it has no fruit or substance. The real tree, the source of the reflection, exists in the spiritual world.
- The material world is shadow reflection of the spiritual world. Unless the original thing is there in the spiritual world, it cannot be reflected in the material world.
- In the desert there is no water, but the mirage suggests that there is such a thing as water. In the material world there is no water, there is no happiness, but the real water of actual happiness is there in the spiritual world.
- The varieties of this world would be impossible unless there were a real prototype in the spiritual world. The Mayavadi philosopher cannot understand this.
The Absolute Nature
In the material world, duality and loss are constant. If you take money from a pile, the pile diminishes. In the spiritual world, however, the laws of existence are absolute. Everything is eternal and inexhaustible, a principle described by the mathematical formula: one minus one equals one.
- The significance of spirituality is that everything is eternal and inexhaustible. Everything taken from everything remains everything, or, as has been stated, in the spiritual world one minus one equals one, and one plus one equals one.
- Material conception there is difference. If you want water, simply by chanting, "water, water," your satisfaction will not be there. But in the spiritual world, everything being absolute, there is no difference between the name Krsna and the person Krsna.
Transcendental Variegatedness
The spiritual world is not a void; it is full of people, activities, and environments. There is romance, friendship, and even competition, but Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that these exchanges are free from the contamination of material inebriety. For example, while sex life in the material world is the central shackle of bondage, its reality exists in the spiritual world as the pure, loving exchange between Kṛṣṇa and the gopīs.
- In the spiritual world, all the perverted forms of material variegatedness are fully represented in their original spiritual identity. The only difference is that material activities are contaminated by the three modes of material nature.
- The tendency to be attracted by womanly beauty is natural because it exists in the spiritual world. In the material world it is reflected pervertedly, and therefore there are so many inebrieties.
- Even in the spiritual world there is varieties. That varieties are reflected in this material world. Therefore here also, we love somebody as friend, we love somebody as wife, we love somebody as father, we love somebody as mother, like that.
A Life of Unadulterated Service
Śrīla Prabhupāda notes one more point regarding the central principle of the spiritual world: it is the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Unlike the material world, where everyone competes to be the master, in the spiritual realm, everyone competes to be the best servant. This service attitude is so pure that there is no distinction between the master and the servant in terms of enjoyment.
- In the material world the senses are manipulated for individual and personal satisfaction, whereas in the spiritual world the senses are properly used for the purpose for which they were originally meant, namely the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord.
- In the spiritual world the only enjoyer is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. All others are enjoyed.
- In the spiritual world there often seems to be no difference between the master and the servant. For instance, Krsna's friends the cowherd boys - they do not know that Krsna is God. They play with Him on equal terms.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda asserts that the spiritual world is the home we are all looking for. It is the place of real water, real relationships, and real happiness. By understanding that our current experience is just a shadow of that reality, we can redirect our attachment from the reflection to the substance, preparing ourselves to return to that eternal abode where life is ever-fresh and full of bliss.
