Transcendental Nature Of Mahā-prasādam
Mahā-prasādam, the remnants of food offered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is not merely a ritualistic substance but the Lord Himself appearing in the form of mercy. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that understanding the absolute nature of these remnants is crucial for spiritual advancement, as they are completely distinct from ordinary material food. By honoring mahā-prasādam with faith and devotion, one purifies their existence and directly associates with the Supreme Lord.
The Spiritual Substance
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that a devotee on the advanced platform of bhakti never views the Lord's remnants as material matter. Mahā-prasādam is a transcendental substance that is nondifferent from Kṛṣṇa, and realizing this truth allows one to honor it with the proper reverence and spiritual outcome.
- Maha-prasadam is nondifferent from Krsna. Therefore, instead of eating maha-prasadam, one should honor it.
- A pure Vaisnava, or a person on the paramahamsa stage, accepts the remnants of food as spiritual. He does not consider it to be material or sense gratificatory. He accepts maha-prasadam not as ordinary dhal and rice but as spiritual substance.
- Those who are not pious cannot understand the value of maha-prasadam or the holy name of the Lord. Both prasadam and the Lord's name are on the Brahman platform, or spiritual platform.
Mahā-mahā-prasādam: The Remnants of Devotees
The remnants left by a pure Vaiṣṇava or a great soul like Lord Śiva are considered even more potent than ordinary prasādam. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when a pure devotee partakes of the Lord's offering, the remnants are elevated to the status of mahā-mahā-prasādam, capable of freeing one from all material contamination.
- The remnants of food left by a pure Vaisnava are called maha-maha-prasadam. This is completely spiritual and is identified with Lord Visnu. Such remnants are not ordinary.
- Actually, by eating such maha-prasadam (the remnants of food left by a pure Vaisnava), one is freed from all the contaminations of the material condition. That is the verdict of the sastra.
- It is said that among all the devotees of the Personality of Godhead, Lord Siva is the greatest. Thus the remnants of foodstuff left by him are accepted by other devotees as maha-prasada, or great spiritual foodstuff.
Transcendental Etiquette and Faith
The injunctions of the śāstra dictate that mahā-prasādam must be honored immediately upon receipt, bypassing ordinary rules of cleanliness or time. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that hesitation or consideration of time and place indicates a lack of faith, whereas immediate acceptance pleases the Lord.
- The Bhattacarya said, "One should eat the maha-prasadam of the Lord immediately upon receiving it, even though it is dried up, stale or brought from a distant country. One should consider neither time nor place".
- It is said here (in CC Antya 11.20), karila vandana, “he offered prayers.” When taking maha-prasadam, one should not consider the food ordinary preparations. Prasada means favor. One should consider maha-prasadam a favor of Krsna.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu continued, "I think that today all My desires have been fulfilled because I see that Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya has acquired faith in the maha-prasadam of Lord Jagannatha".
Avoidance of Offenses
One must strictly avoid accepting food offered by non-devotees in the name of mahā-prasādam, as an avaiṣṇava cannot actually offer anything to Lord Viṣṇu. Furthermore, Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that viewing the Lord's mercy with a dualistic or mundane vision can lead to severe karmic reactions, including disease and degradation.
- Ordinary food cooked by an avaisnava should not be accepted by a Vaisnava. Even if an avaisnava cooks food without fault, he cannot offer it to Lord Visnu, and it cannot be accepted as maha-prasadam.
- Even if one is a brahmana he is certain to be attacked by leprosy and bereft of all family members if he makes dualistic considerations (of maha-prasadam). Such an offender goes to hell, never to return. This is the injunction of the Brhad-visnu Purana.
- In the Brhad-visnu Purana it is stated that one who considers maha-prasadam to be equal to ordinary rice and dhal certainly commits a great offense.
Conclusion
The transcendental nature of mahā-prasādam lies in its ability to bridge the gap between the material world and the spiritual reality. As demonstrated by Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings, proper interaction with the Lord's remnants—characterized by faith, immediacy, and a rejection of mundane concepts—is essential for spiritual health. When a devotee accepts mahā-prasādam as the direct favor of Kṛṣṇa, they are protected from material illusion and situated firmly on the path of liberation.
