The Glories of Navadvipa Dhama
Navadvīpa is the most sacred land in the Age of Kali, the birthplace of the Golden Avatāra, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Although physically located in the Nadia district of West Bengal, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that spiritually, Navadvīpa is identical to Vṛndāvana. Just as Lord Kṛṣṇa appeared in Vraja to manifest His sweetness, He appeared in Navadvīpa as Lord Caitanya to distribute His mercy. For the devotee, residing in Navadvīpa is the perfection of life, offering immediate contact with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Geography of the Nine Islands
The name "Navadvīpa" literally means "nine islands." These islands—Antardvīpa, Sīmantadvīpa, Godrumadvīpa, Madhyadvīpa, Koladvīpa, Ṛtudvīpa, Jahnudvīpa, Modadrumadvīpa, and Rudradvīpa—are formed by the branches of the Ganges and cover an area of approximately thirty-two square miles. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the actual birthsite of the Lord is in Antardvīpa (Māyāpur), whereas the modern town known as Navadvīpa was formerly known as Kuliya-grāma or Koladvīpa.
- The present Navadvipa-dhama is but a part of the whole of Navadvipa. Navadvipa means “nine islands.” These nine islands, which occupy an area of land estimated at thirty-two square miles, are surrounded by different branches of the Ganges.
- According to the settlement map, our ISKCON Navadvipa center is situated on the Rudradvipa island. Below Rudradvipa, in Antardvipa, is Mayapur. There Sri Jagannatha Misra, the father of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, used to reside.
- One can conclude (from CC Madhya 16.207) that the present-day city of Navadvipa and the places known as Bahiradvipa, Kolera Ganja, Kola-amada, Kolera Daha, Gadakhali, etc., were known as Kuliya, but the so-called Kuliyara Pada is not the original Kuliya.
Identity with Vṛndāvana
A central theme in Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava theology is the nondifference between the Lord's abodes. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that anyone living in Navadvīpa-dhāma who understands that Lord Caitanya is non-different from Kṛṣṇa is actually living in Vṛndāvana. The spiritual potency of the dhāma is such that it purifies the conditioned soul and grants liberation from the material conception of life.
- Living in Jagannatha Puri is as good as living in Vrndavana. The conclusion is that Navadvipa-dhama, Jagannatha Puri-dhama and Vrndavana-dhama are identical.
- Anyone living in Navadvipa-dhama, knowing Krsna and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to be the same personality, lives in Vrajabhumi, Mathura-Vrndavana.
- Vrajabhumi refers to Mathura-Vrndavana, and Gauda-mandala-bhumi includes Navadvipa. These two places are nondifferent.
The Birthplace of Sankīrtana
Navadvīpa is the headquarters of the sankīrtana movement. Five hundred years ago, Lord Caitanya inaugurated the mass chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa here. The streets would vibrate with the sound of "Hari! Hari!", mṛdaṅgas, and karatālas. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that this legacy continues today, with ISKCON establishing a major center in Māyāpur to fulfill the desire of the Lord that His name be chanted in every town and village.
- When the sankirtana movement thus started, no one in Navadvipa could hear any sound other than the words "Hari! Hari!" and the beating of the mrdanga and clashing of hand bells.
- It is the desire of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu that the benevolent activities of the sankirtana movement, which was inaugurated five hundred years ago in Navadvipa, be spread all over the world for the benefit of all human beings.
- The ISKCON has already constructed a big temple at Mayapur, Navadvipa, which is being visited by devotees from all parts of the world, as foretold by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and anticipated by Sri Bhaktivinoda Thakura.
The Scholarly Atmosphere
Historically, Navadvīpa was a renowned center of learning and logic (nyāya). Scholars from all over India would come to study there. However, this academic pride often became an obstacle to devotion. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that before the advent of Lord Caitanya, the brāhmaṇas were more interested in dry arguments than in serving Kṛṣṇa. The Lord appeared to defeat this atheistic scholarship and establish the supremacy of bhakti.
- In Navadvipa all the learned scholars are followers of the smrti-sastra, and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu did not attempt to convert them.
- Students from various parts of India still come to Navadvipa to study logic.
- At that time there were many smartas (nondevotee followers of Vedic rituals) at the holy place of Navadvipa, which was also the birthplace of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
Expanding the Dhāma
The mercy of Navadvīpa is not limited by geography. Śrīla Prabhupāda taught that wherever the devotees chant the holy names and follow the instructions of Lord Caitanya, that place transforms into Navadvīpa. He specifically envisioned communities like "New Navadvīpa" in Hawaii, explaining that the potent vibration of the mahā-mantra creates the spiritual atmosphere of the dhāma anywhere in the world.
- If a devotee follows the instructions of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he lives in the company of the Lord. Wherever he lives, he converts that place into Vrndavana and Navadvipa. This means that materialism cannot touch him.
- Whatever we have done and whatever we are doing, the atonement is chant Hare Krsna mantra. So we haven't got to go to Vrndavana. We have brought Vrndavana, Nabadwip, here in Hawaii, in this temple.
- In Nabadwip Dhama there is a railroad station called Samudragarh, and it is said that sometimes the ocean was there. So, on the Pacific Ocean, if you can establish New Nabadwip, that will be a great achievement.
Conclusion
Navadvīpa-dhāma is the gateway to the highest spiritual perfection. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that by taking shelter of this holy land—whether physically in Bengal or through the chanting of the Holy Name—one becomes free from the contamination of Kali-yuga. It is the place where God appeared not as a judge, but as a devotee, to teach the world the process of love.
