The Essence of the Vedas
The Vedic library is immense, encompassing the four Vedas, the Upaniṣads, the Purāṇas, and the Mahābhārata. For the conditioned soul, navigating this vast ocean of knowledge can be bewildering. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that one need not study every branch of the Vedic tree; rather, one should taste its "ripened fruit." The essence of all these literatures is singular: to understand and love the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa.
Ripened Fruit: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam
Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam as the cream of all Vedic literatures. Compiled by Vyāsadeva in his mature stage of self-realization, it represents the essence of the Vedānta philosophy. It is described as the "ripened fruit of the wish-fulfilling tree of Vedic knowledge," sweetened by the lips of Śukadeva Gosvāmī.
- Bhagavatam is the essence of all Vedic literature (nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam (SB 1.1.3)). It was written by Vyasadeva (maha-muni-krte) when he was self-realized.
- The Srimad-Bhagavatam is the essence of all Vedic literatures, and it is considered the ripened fruit of the wish-fulfilling tree of Vedic knowledge. It has been sweetened by emanating from the mouth of Sukadeva Gosvami.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam is the essence of all Vedanta philosophy. Any person who has become attached in some way or other to the reading of Srimad-Bhagavatam cannot have any taste for reading any other literature.
Summary: Bhagavad-gītā
Before approaching the Bhāgavatam, one must understand the A-B-C-D of spiritual knowledge. This is found in the Bhagavad-gītā, which Śrīla Prabhupāda calls the essence of all the Upaniṣads and the preliminary explanation of the Vedānta-sūtras. Because it is spoken directly by God, this one book is sufficient to guide a person to perfection.
- To summarize all these Vedic literatures (four Vedas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas and Vedanta-sutras), the Bhagavad-gita is accepted as the essence of all Upanisads and the preliminary explanation of the Vedanta-sutras.
- This one book, Bhagavad-gita, will suffice, because it is the essence of all Vedic literatures and especially because it is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- At the present age people are embarrassed with so many things that it is hardly possible to divert his attention in all the Vedic literatures. This one literature (Bhagavad-gita) will do because it is essence of all Vedic literature.
Goal: Knowing Kṛṣṇa
The ultimate purpose of studying the Vedas is not to become a dry scholar but to find Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Vedānta means "the essence of knowledge," and that knowledge is to understand the Supreme Person. Without this realization, mere academic study is futile.
- The Bhagavad-gita is the essence of all Vedic literatures because, after all, Vedic literature means to understand Krsna, the Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the purpose of Vedic study.
- If we want to have knowledge of everything, the source of knowledge is Vedas. And the essence of Veda is called Vedanta. And the descriptive explanation of Vedanta is Srimad-Bhagavatam.
- The purpose of the Vedic literatures is to know Me by different speculations, either by indirect understanding or by dictionary understanding. Everyone is speculating about Me. The essence of all Vedic literatures is to distinguish Me from maya.
Essence for Kali-yuga
In the current Age of Kali, elaborate Vedic sacrifices and deep philosophical study are often impossible. Therefore, the essence of all Vedic mantras has been concentrated into the chanting of the holy names. Śrīla Prabhupāda cites Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's instruction that the chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa is the only means for self-realization in this age.
- In this Age of Kali there is no religious principle other than the chanting of the holy name, which is the essence of all Vedic hymns. This is the purport of all scriptures.
- He said, "You are a fool" "You are not qualified to study Vedanta philosophy, and therefore You must always chant the holy name of Krsna. This is the essence of all mantras, or Vedic hymns."
- In this age of logic, argument and disagreement, the chanting of Hare Krsna is the only means for self-realization. Because this transcendental vibration alone can deliver the conditioned soul, it is considered to be the essence of the Vedanta-sutra.
Conclusion
A person who has assimilated the essence of the Vedas is considered a first-class educated person. By accepting the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and engaging in the chanting of the holy name, one achieves the ultimate goal of all knowledge: transcendental loving service to the Lord.
