Regulated Human Life According to Vedic Principles
Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that human life is distinct from animal existence specifically due to the acceptance of scriptural regulation. While animals act according to the dictates of their senses, a civilized human being acts according to the injunctions of the Vedas. This article explores how Vedic principles provide a comprehensive blueprint for society, governance, family life, and personal hygiene, all designed to purify existence and lead the soul toward self-realization.
Foundation of Social and Spiritual Order
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a peaceful society requires a scientific division of labor known as varṇāśrama-dharma. Just as a body has different parts—head, arms, belly, and legs—society is divided into brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, and śūdras, along with spiritual stages of life, to ensure cooperation and spiritual progress.
- According to Vedic principles, society is divided into four categories - brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya and sudra. After dividing society in this way, it is the king's duty to see that everyone executes Vedic principles according to his caste.
- According to Vedic principles, everyone must act according to his classification as brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra, brahmacari, grhastha, vanaprastha or sannyasi.
- According to our Vedic principle a brahmana is supposed to accept the four asramas, namely brahmacari, grhastha, vanaprastha, and sannyasa.
- According to Vedic principles, there must be divisions of human society (catur-varnyam maya srstam (BG 4.13)). There should be brahmanas, ksatriyas, vaisyas and sudras, and everyone should learn to worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead - tam abhyarcya.
Sanctity of Marriage and Family Life
In the Vedic conception, family life is not a license for unrestricted sense gratification but a religious duty. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that marriage separates humans from animals, establishing a system where sex life is utilized solely for begetting God-conscious children and where women are always protected.
- According to the Vedic principles, sex should not be indulged in outside of marriage. In human society there is therefore a system of marriage which distinguishes us from the cats and dogs.
- According to the Vedic system of marriage for producing children, every man and woman was enlightened in spiritual knowledge, and at the time of their combination to produce a child, everything was scrutinizingly and scientifically done.
- A woman should always be protected. According to the Vedic rule, there is no scope for a woman's being independent (asamaksam), for a woman cannot protect herself independently.
- Here (in Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.3.33) is an instruction about how to use one's senses to create progeny. According to Vedic principles, before creating progeny one must fully control the senses. This control takes place through the garbhadhana-samskara.
Daily Conduct, Hygiene, and Worship
A human being is expected to follow strict standards of cleanliness and spiritual discipline. Śrīla Prabhupāda details how the Vedic lifestyle mandates rising early, maintaining physical purity, and organizing one's living environment to support spiritual consciousness.
- According to the Vedic principles, one should rise early in the morning, take bath, chant Hare Krsna, offer mangala-arati to the Deities, study Vedic literature, take prasada and engage in dressing and decorating the Deities.
- According to religious principles, stool, urine, wash water, must be left at a long distance. Attached bathrooms, urinals, may be very convenient amenities of modern civilization, but they are ordered to be situated at a distance from residential quarters.
- According to Vedic principles, bones and dung are generally considered very impure. If one touches a bone or stool, he must take a bath immediately. That is the Vedic injunction.
Governance and Protection of Citizens
According to Vedic principles, the primary duty of a government is to ensure the spiritual and material welfare of all citizens. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that a righteous king protects the vulnerable—especially cows, women, children, and brāhmaṇas—and rules strictly according to the advice of saintly persons.
- It is the king's duty to see that everyone engages in his occupational duty according to Vedic principles.
- According to the Vedic principles, the king should be advised by learned sages, brahmanas and scholars, who advise him according to the injunctions given in the dharma-sastra. The duty of the king is to follow these instructions.
- According to Vedic principles, a woman, a brahmana, an old man, a child and a cow should never be killed.
Conclusion
The regulations found within the Vedic literatures are not meant to burden the living entity but to liberate him. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that by following these scientific principles—covering everything from social organization to daily hygiene—a human being purifies his existence. When human life is regulated by śāstra, it fosters peace, cooperation, and ultimately, the remembrance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, which is the perfection of existence.
