Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu in Prayāga
Prayāga, modern-day Allahabad, is a holy pilgrimage site located at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamunā rivers. However, for followers of Lord Caitanya, its significance is magnified because it is the place where the Lord imparted His most confidential instructions to Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Caitanya chose this location to empower Rūpa Gosvāmī to spread the scientific knowledge of devotional service to the world.
The Historic Meeting
After renouncing his government position, Rūpa Gosvāmī traveled to Prayāga to meet Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes this meeting as deeply emotional; Rūpa Gosvāmī offered his obeisances, and the Lord embraced him with delight. This union symbolized the perfect disciple finding the perfect master, ready to receive the treasury of spiritual knowledge.
- He (Caitanya Mahaprabhu) personally taught the whole world how one must detach oneself and become a devotee of Krsna. Therefore Rupa Gosvami resigned his post as a government minister and met Caitanya Mahaprabhu at Prayaga.
- At Prayaga, Rupa Gosvami fell down on the ground to offer obeisances to the Lord, and the Lord embraced him with great delight.
- Although the Lord was transcendentally situated in His transcendental eternal form, at Prayaga He told Rupa Gosvami about transcendental ecstatic love of Krsna. The Lord then embraced him very fondly and bestowed all His mercy upon him.
Instructions at Daśāśvamedha-ghāṭa
For ten days, Lord Caitanya instructed Rūpa Gosvāmī at the famous Daśāśvamedha-ghāṭa. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that these were not ordinary conversations but a transfer of potency. The Lord detailed the science of bhakti-rasa, explaining the evolution of the soul from the seed of faith to the highest platform of love of God.
- For ten days Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu stayed at Prayaga and instructed Rupa Gosvami, empowering him with the necessary potency.
- Lord Caitanya taught this process of devotional service, or work with transcendental results, to Srila Rupa Gosvami at Dasasvamedha-ghata in Prayaga.
- The Lord (Caitanya) told Sanatana Gosvami that He had previously taught his younger brother, Rupa Gosvami, at Prayaga (Allahabad). The Lord assured Sanatana Gosvami that He had empowered Rupa Gosvami to spread the knowledge He had given him.
The Seed and the Mad Elephant
Two of the most famous analogies in Gauḍīya philosophy were delivered at Prayāga. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Lord described the "seed of the creeper of devotion" (bhakti-latā-bīja) which is received by a fortunate soul. Conversely, He warned against the "mad elephant offense" (vaiṣṇava-aparādha), which can uproot that creeper entirely. These metaphors form the core of the practical guidance given to Rūpa Gosvāmī.
- Lord Caitanya advised Rupa Gosvami on the bank of the Ganges at Prayaga, that only the most fortunate souls can obtain the seed of devotional service, by the mercy of the Personality of Godhead and His bona fide representative.
- When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was instructing Rupa Gosvami at the Dasasvamedha-ghata in Prayaga, He pointed out very clearly the seriousness of offending a Vaisnava. He compared the vaisnava-aparadha to hati mata, a mad elephant.
Inundating Prayāga with Love
While staying in Prayāga, Lord Caitanya also interacted with Vallabha Bhaṭṭa (Vallabhācārya). Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord's presence attracted thousands of people. Although the Ganges and Yamunā are famous for purifying sinners, Lord Caitanya purified the place itself by inundating it with the waves of ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa, sometimes even jumping into the rivers in spiritual ecstasy.
- Prayaga is located at the confluence of two rivers - the Ganges and the Yamuna. Although these rivers were not able to flood Prayaga with water, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu inundated the whole area with waves of ecstatic love for Krsna.
- Vallabha Bhatta then decided not to keep Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu at Adaila because the Lord had jumped into the river Yamuna in ecstatic love. Therefore he decided to bring Him to Prayaga.
- Everyone was astounded to see the greatness of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Indeed, I (Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami) cannot properly describe the pastimes of the Lord at Prayaga.
Conclusion
The Lord's visit to Prayāga was more than a pilgrimage; it was a seminar on the science of God. By instructing Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī at this holy confluence, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Caitanya established the philosophical foundations of His movement. Today, Daśāśvamedha-ghāṭa stands not just as a bathing place, but as the site where the confidential truths of bhakti were revealed to the world.
