Entangled Activities of a Conditioned Soul
The philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, as taught by Śrīla Prabhupāda, provides a profound analysis of the plight of the conditioned soul within the material world. A conditioned soul is one who has forgotten his eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead and has subsequently fallen under the sway of māyā, or the illusory energy. Driven by the false ego and the desire to enjoy separately from the Lord, such a soul becomes entangled in a complex web of activities that result not in freedom, but in perpetual bondage and the repetition of birth and death.
Under the Grip of Material Nature
Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the conditioned soul is never truly independent; he is strictly controlled by the stringent laws of material nature and the influence of eternal time. Although the living entity may foolishly consider himself the doer of his activities, he is actually a puppet in the hands of the three modes of nature, forced to act according to the psychophysical frame he has acquired.
- A conditioned soul is enwrapped in his fruitive activities by the force of eternal time. But the Supreme Lord, when He incarnates on the earth, is not influenced by kala, or the material conception of past, present and future.
- Any great man of the material world is, after all, a conditioned soul. He is bound by his hands and feet by the ropes of material nature, and still the foolish conditioned soul thinks of himself as free to act by his whimsical sentiments.
- Every conditioned soul is influenced by a particular mixture of the modes of material nature. The conditioned soul is attracted to certain types of activity which he is forced to perform because he is completely under the influence of material nature.
Trap of Fruitive Work
In the pursuit of illusory happiness, the conditioned soul engages in karma, or fruitive activities, hoping to enjoy the results of his labor. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this path is fraught with frustration because these activities, whether pious or impious, bind the soul to the material world through an endless chain of reactions, preventing him from understanding the true goal of life.
- In hopes of becoming happy in this material world, the foolish conditioned soul performs fruitive activities that result only in suffering.
- As a monkey takes shelter of the branch of a banyan tree and thinks he is enjoying, the conditioned soul, not knowing the real interest of his life, takes shelter of the path of karma-kanda, fruitive activities.
- Fruitive activity (karma) is meant to satisfy the senses of the conditioned soul. However, when one awakens to Krsna consciousness, he does not have to work separately for pious activity.
Bodily Conception of Life
The root cause of the soul's entanglement is the false identification with the temporary material body. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the conditioned soul, covered by the cloud of ignorance, mistakes the body for the self and thus directs all his endeavors toward satisfying the senses, ignoring the needs of the eternal spirit soul within.
- The main disease in material life is the bodily conception. Being baffled again and again in material activity, the conditioned soul temporarily thinks of the futility of material enjoyment, but he again tries the same thing.
- All conditioned souls, being under the impression of the bodily concept, are working according to their particular type of body. These activities are creating their future conditioned life.
- The body is made of senses. The conditioned soul wants to enjoy sense gratification, and, according to his capacity to enjoy sense gratification, he is offered a body, or field of activity.
Cycle of Birth and Death
Due to the accumulation of karma and unfulfilled desires, the conditioned soul is forced to transmigrate from one body to another in a cycle known as saṁsāra. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes this wandering as a perilous journey where the soul may be elevated to heavenly planets or degraded to lower species, yet never finds permanent relief from the miseries of material existence.
- He (the conditioned soul) does not cease such faulty activities, he has to change to different bodies, some high and some low. That is called samsara-padavim, which means this material world, from which there is no release.
- Our real problem is that we are entangled in materialistic activities, and because we are conditioned, our struggle continues through punishment in material existence in one body after another in different forms of life.
- The conditioned soul transmigrates into different species of life, higher and lower, because of his association with the modes of material nature. Unless he is relieved of material activities, he has to accept this position because of his faulty work.
Liberation through Kṛṣṇa Consciousness
The only way to break free from the entanglement of material activities is to revive one's original consciousness through the process of bhakti-yoga. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that by surrendering to Kṛṣṇa and acting under His direction, the conditioned soul is purified of all karmic reactions and regains his constitutional position as an eternal servant of the Lord.
- By Krsna consciousness, he (conditioned soul) can revive his real position and thus come out of his embodiment. Therefore, when one takes to Krsna consciousness, one at once becomes completely aloof from bodily activities.
- If a conditioned soul becomes Krsna conscious, the karma of his pious and impious activities is completely destroyed.
- A conditioned soul under the spell of material nature cannot understand that any action he performs for sense gratification is faulty and that only his activities in devotional service to God can give him release from the reaction of faulty activities.
Conclusion
The plight of the conditioned soul is one of struggle, illusion, and repeated suffering caused by a forgetfulness of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda elucidates that as long as the living entity tries to lord it over material nature through fruitive activities, he remains bound by the stringent laws of karma and the cycle of birth and death. However, the path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness offers a definitive solution. By shifting one's activities from sense gratification to the service of the Supreme Lord, the conditioned soul can transcend the modes of material nature and attain the ultimate freedom of spiritual life.
