Engaging in Speculation - Beating the Empty Husk
The attempt to understand the Absolute Truth through one's own intellectual prowess is known as mental speculation. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that this path is fraught with difficulty and ultimately futile. Without the "grain" of devotion, the "husk" of academic or philosophical study offers no nourishment to the soul. True understanding of the Supreme Personality of Godhead comes not from ascending speculation, but from the descending mercy of the Lord.
The Futility of Dry Speculation
Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently compares the process of speculative knowledge to beating an empty husk of wheat. It is a process of hard labor that results only in trouble. Even if one strictly follows the path of knowledge (jñāna) or pious activity, if it is devoid of devotional service, the practitioner is ultimately defeated. The goal of life is to get out of the material clutches, but speculation often keeps one hovering in the darkness of material impermanence.
- A person who beats an empty husk of wheat cannot get grain, and one who engages simply in speculative knowledge cannot achieve the desired result of self realization. The only gain is trouble.
- If someone gives up that path (of devotional service) and engages in the cultivation of knowledge or in speculation, he will simply undergo a troublesome process and will not achieve his desired results.
- Even though one engages in pious activity and speculation, he is nonetheless defeated. His only aim should be emancipation from the clutches of maya and all material activities.
- Jnanis are engaged in philosophical speculation in order to gain release from the clutches of material nature. In these ways everyone is engaged in performing very difficult tasks simply for the gratification of the senses.
The Barrier to Knowing God
Speculation is particularly ineffective when it comes to understanding the personal nature of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that even a devotee with a small fraction of mercy can understand the Lord, whereas a non-devotee scholar, despite engaging in Vedānta and high philosophy, remains ignorant. The "word jugglery" of philosophers may be impressive, but without the "tinge of true Kṛṣṇa consciousness," it cannot reveal the Absolute Truth.
- A devotee who has received even a small fraction of the mercy of the Lord can understand Him. Others may engage in theoretical speculation to understand the Lord, but they cannot know anything about Him.
- Nondevotees who are engaged in Vedanta and speculation on Vedic literature without any tinge of true Krsna consciousness are also less intelligent, and for them it is not possible to understand God's personal nature.
- Generally, people are engaged in different activities to get some material profit, while most philosophers are engaged in proposing transcendental realization through volumes of word jugglery and speculation.
- The impersonalists, because they engage in mental speculation and have no faith in the Personality of Godhead, have no business hearing the topics of Krsna. Such persons are pitiable for the first-class pure devotees of the Lord.
Devotion vs. Speculation
The path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is declared to be far superior to the path of speculation. While the speculator tries to understand "what is Brahman and what is not Brahman" through negation (neti neti), the devotee directly accepts the shelter of Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that speculators may eventually come to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, but only after many, many births. Therefore, he advises that we should not accept the mind as a competitor but should simply engage in full consciousness of the Lord.
- The conclusion is that those who are engaged in Krsna consciousness are better situated than the sannyasis engaged in simple Brahman speculation, although they too come to Krsna consciousness, after many births. BG 1972 purports.
- Those who are engaged in Krsna conscious activities are better situated than the sannyasis engaged in simple speculation about what is Brahman and what is not Brahman.
- Why should we accept a competitor? We should not simply engage in mental speculation but should accept Krsna in full consciousness and be happy. This is made possible by the help of the guru; therefore Devahuti is further questioning her son, Kapiladeva.
- One who avoids such association (with persons already in the highest stage of love of God) and simply engages in mental speculation or so-called meditation cannot be raised to the perfectional platform.
Authorized Inquiry
It is important to distinguish between dry speculation and the "philosophical research" of a devotee. A devotee is thoughtful and intelligent; however, their mental energy is not used to invent new truths but to understand the established truths of the scripture. For example, Lord Śiva is described as always thoughtful, but his thoughts are focused on delivering the fallen souls, not on useless mental gymnastics.
- Since a devotee engages in philosophical research to understand the Supreme Person as He is his activities may thus appear to be like those of a mental speculator, but actually he is trying to understand the spiritual nature and transcendental activities.
- Lord Siva does not engage in useless mental speculation, but as stated in the previous verse (SB 4.6.38), he is always thoughtful regarding how to deliver the demons from their fallen condition of life.
- Narada said, "Persons engaged in speculating on transcendental knowledge and performing charitable functions have for all their auspicious activities simply to gain a place in the association of devotees and to chant the glories of the Lord".
Conclusion
Engaging in speculation is a detour on the spiritual path. It offers the illusion of knowledge without the substance of realization. As Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches, the mercy of Kṛṣṇa is the only means to cross the ocean of ignorance. By abandoning the laborious beating of empty husks and accepting the process of bhakti, one achieves the highest perfection without the trouble.
