Education of the Conditioned Soul
The conditioned soul is entangled in material conception and suffers due to misdirected education. Real education must guide the soul to understand his eternal position and revive Kṛṣṇa consciousness, offering relief from repeated birth and death. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that without such spiritual guidance, all mundane learning is insufficient.
Mental Speculation and Mundane Learning
Even highly learned scholars remain under the influence of material speculation. Mundane knowledge alone cannot liberate the soul from the cycle of birth and death.
- A conditioned soul is under the influence of mental speculation. However great one may be in the estimation of mundane education and learning, he cannot be free from the influence of psychic activities.
- Being covered by material bodies, the conditioned souls, including even greatly learned scholars and falsely educated professors, all think that as soon as the body is finished, everything is finished. This is due to their bodily conception of life.
Guidance by Sastras and Spiritual Teachers
People who do not follow the instructions of the sastras are misled by imperfect teachers. Real education must come from spiritually qualified authorities.
- Because people do not refer to the instructions of sastras, which are free from defects and imperfections, they are therefore misguided by so-called educated teachers and leaders who are full of the deficiencies of conditioned life.
- Education means to learn from the learned person. But if you are learning from a rascal and fool, then what is your education.
Devotional Education and Kṛṣṇa Consciousness
The ultimate education for the conditioned soul is to engage in devotional service to Hṛṣikeśa, redirecting all senses from material enjoyment toward spiritual fulfillment.
- Everyone must be educated in Visnu worship and engaged in the devotional service of Hrsikesa, the owner of the senses. The conditioned souls are meant not to satisfy their material senses but to satisfy the senses of Hrsikesa.
- Their aim (Narada and the Kumaras) is that all the conditioned souls may be educated to revive their original consciousness, or Krsna consciousness, and thus gain relief from the miserable conditions of material life.
Materialistic Education and Its Pitfalls
Materialistic education only strengthens attachment to māyā, keeping the soul bound to temporary life miseries, whereas spiritual guidance liberates him.
- Materialistic education expands the influence of maya. Such an education induces the conditioned soul to be increasingly attracted to materialistic life and to stray further and further away from liberation from unwanted miseries.
- This verse (SB 9.24.58) says, anugrahas tan-nivrtteh, indicating that the false life of repeated birth and death must be stopped and the conditioned soul should be educated. This is the purpose of the creation.
Conclusion
The education of the conditioned soul is not mere acquisition of material knowledge but a spiritual training that restores the soul to his eternal service to Kṛṣṇa. Following the sastras and guidance of spiritually qualified teachers ensures that the soul transcends material miseries and realizes his original consciousness.
