Divine Expansions and Associates Accompanying God
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the source of all relationships and is therefore never solitary. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that God is always enjoying the company of His loving associates, energies, and expansions. Through the teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda, we understand that the concept of a lonely or impersonal God is contrary to the Vedic conclusion, which reveals the Lord as the central figure of an eternal, divine family.
The Principle of Divine Association
Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the Supreme Lord is always surrounded by His devotees and servitors. He uses the practical example of a worldly king to demonstrate that if a mundane leader is never alone, the Supreme Person is certainly always accompanied by His divine entourage.
- A king is always accompanied by his ministers, secretaries and commanders, and Lord Visnu is also accompanied by His followers - the demigods, great sages, saintly persons and so on. He is never alone.
- Whenever the Personality of Godhead descends to this mortal world, He is accompanied by His confidential servants.
- Whenever a devotee sees the Lord, he sees Him in a most beautifully decorated form, accompanied by His constant companion the goddess of fortune, who is eternally beautiful.
Incarnations and Their Associates
When the Lord descends to this world, He brings His intimate associates to assist in His pastimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Lord Rāmacandra appeared with Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa, and how Lord Caitanya appeared with His associates to introduce the saṅkīrtana movement. According to him, these associates are expansions of the Lord's internal potency.
- As stated in Bhagavad-gita (4.7), God appears when there are discrepancies in the discharge of factual religion. Lord Ramacandra appeared under the same circumstances, accompanied by His brothers, who are expansions of God's internal potency, and by Laksmiji Sitadevi.
- In the Age of Kali, Lord Krsna assumes a golden color and, accompanied by His personal devotees, introduces hari-nama-sankirtana, the chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra. By this process He delivers love for Krsna to the general populace.
- The Lord was also accompanied by Hanuman (or by another monkey, Sugriva), king of the monkeys, and by His own younger brother Lord Laksmana, both of whom gave Him relief from the fatigue of wandering in the forest.
The Process of Creation
Even in the matter of material creation, the Lord is accompanied by His potencies. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the puruṣa-avatāras—Kāraṇodakaśāyī, Garbhodakaśāyī, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu—accompany the Supreme Lord to manifest the material universes, bringing with them the necessary ingredients for creation.
- In the beginning of the creation, the Lord expanded Himself in the form of the purusa incarnation, accompanied by all the ingredients of material creation.
- His pure devotees and His three purusa incarnations, namely, Karanodakasayi Visnu, Garbhodakasayi Visnu and Ksirodakasayi Visnu, always accompany the Supreme Lord to propound the sankirtana movement.
- Accompanying Him (God) were all of the seven primary elements - the five material elements, the total energy (mahat-tattva) and the false ego. This entrance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead involves His entering even the atoms of the material world.
The Purpose of Divine Appearance
The Lord appears to protect the faithful and annihilate the miscreants, and in this mission, He is fully equipped. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that when God appears to address friction caused by non-devotees, He comes with His plenary portions and weapons. He further notes that for this age, the recommended process is to satisfy the Lord who is accompanied by His saṅkīrtana party.
- There are many instances of harassment of the peaceful devotees by the itaras. When such friction takes place, God, out of His great compassion towards His pure devotees, appears in person, accompanied by His plenary portions controlling the mahat-tattva.
- For this age it is recommended that people gather together and chant the Hare Krsna mantra to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is accompanied by His associates.
- He (the incarnation of Godhead, Lord Caitanya, who constantly sings the name of Krsna) is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions.
Conclusion
The reality that God is never alone offers deep insight into the nature of the Absolute Truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches us that the Supreme Lord is the enjoyer of eternal pastimes, surrounded by those who love Him. Whether in the spiritual sky or within the material universe, the Lord is always accompanied by His expansions and devotees, inviting us to join that divine company through the process of devotional service.
