Caitanya and Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī - The Lord and His Intimate Secretary
To understand the confidential depths of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's later pastimes, one must understand His relationship with Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes Svarūpa Dāmodara as the Lord's constant companion, personal secretary, and "second expansion." While the Lord is the Supreme Personality of Godhead tasting the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, Svarūpa Dāmodara is the purely devoted associate who assists in that internal cultivation. He is the personification of the Lord's ecstatic love.
The Literary Gatekeeper
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was very strict regarding the purity of philosophical conclusions. He could not tolerate rasābhāsa, or the overlapping of conflicting transcendental mellows, which disrupts the mood of devotion. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Svarūpa Dāmodara acted as the filter for the Lord. Any poet or scholar who wished to read their composition to the Lord first had to submit it to Svarūpa Dāmodara. Only if he certified it as pure and distinct would the Lord agree to hear it. This protected the Lord from any disturbance to His devotional trance.
- Customarily, anyone who composed a song, verse, literary composition or poem about Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu first had to bring it to Svarupa Damodara Gosvami to be heard.
- It was the practice of Svarupa Damodara Gosvami to examine all literatures to find out whether their conclusions were correct. Only then would he allow them to be heard by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- If someone wrote a book or composed verses and songs and wanted to recite them before Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Svarupa Damodara would first examine them and then correctly present them. Only then would Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu agree to listen.
The Sanctuary of the Gambhīrā
The most confidential pastimes of Lord Caitanya occurred in the small room known as the Gambhīrā in Jagannātha Purī. Here, the Lord experienced the intense burning separation of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī for Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that only two personalities could enter this inner sanctum: Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī and Rāmānanda Rāya. Night after night, when the Lord would rub His face against the walls in ecstasy or cry in separation, Svarūpa Dāmodara would sing songs from the Gīta-govinda, or the poems of Caṇḍīdāsa and Vidyāpati, to pacify Him. He knew exactly which verse to recite to match the Lord's shifting emotions.
- At night, Lord Caitanya would reveal to Svarupa Damodara and Ramananda Raya the ecstatic feelings of His mind.
- In the company of His two friends, Svarupa Damodara Gosvami and Ramananda Raya, He sometimes danced, sometimes sang and sometimes became unconscious in ecstatic love. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu passed His days and nights in this way.
- To enhance the ecstatic mood of the Lord, Svarupa Damodara Gosvami would sing appropriate songs and Ramananda Raya would recite suitable verses. In this way they were able to pacify Him.
- Sri Svarupa Damodara used to read the poems of Vidyapati and Candidasa and Jayadeva Gosvami's Sri Gita-govinda. He used to make Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu very happy by singing these songs.
Mentor to Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī
When Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī, the embodiment of renunciation, finally escaped his family life and came to Jagannātha Purī, Lord Caitanya did not personally take charge of his training. Instead, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the Lord entrusted him to Svarūpa Dāmodara. The Lord told Raghunātha, "I have appointed Svarūpa Dāmodara as your instructor." Raghunātha dāsa served Svarūpa Dāmodara so faithfully that he became known as Svarūpera Raghu—the Raghunātha of Svarūpa. It was under Svarūpa Dāmodara's tutelage that Raghunātha dāsa learned the essence of the Lord's internal mood.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu entrusted Raghunatha dasa Gosvami to Svarupa Damodara Gosvami. Therefore another name for Raghunatha dasa Gosvami is Svarupera Raghu, or the Raghunatha of Svarupa Damodara.
- My dear Svarupa, He said, I entrust this Raghunatha dasa to you. Please accept him as your son or servant.
- Svarupa Damodara Gosvami accepted Raghunatha dasa, saying, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, whatever You order is accepted. He then embraced Raghunatha dasa again.
Recording the Confidential History
Much of what we know about the final twelve years of Lord Caitanya's life comes from the notes of Svarūpa Dāmodara. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while Murāri Gupta recorded the early pastimes, Svarūpa Dāmodara kept a diary (kaḍacā) of the later, more confidential activities in Purī. Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī memorized these notes, and later, Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī used them as the authoritative foundation for the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta. Thus, the entire paramparā of knowledge regarding the Lord's deepest ecstasies flows through Svarūpa Dāmodara.
- Whatever Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami heard is recorded in Sri Caitanya-caritamrta. This is called the parampara system, from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to Svarupa Damodara to Raghunatha dasa Gosvami to Kaviraja Gosvami.
- Svarupa Damodara and Raghunatha dasa Gosvami recorded the activities of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu moment by moment.
- Svarupa Damodara Gosvami and Raghunatha dasa Gosvami witnessed Caitanya Mahaprabhu's activities firsthand and recorded them in two notebooks. Therefore, without reference to these notebooks one cannot understand the activities of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
Protector and Restorer of Consciousness
In His divine madness, Lord Caitanya would sometimes wander off or perform actions that terrified His devotees—such as jumping into the ocean at night or being caught in a fisherman's net while His body was elongated and distorted. In these moments, it was Svarūpa Dāmodara who would search for the Lord, find Him, and bring Him back to external consciousness, usually by chanting the holy name or singing a specific verse into His ear. Svarūpa Dāmodara's presence was the anchor that kept the Lord connected to the external world for the sake of His devotees.
- After some inquiries, Svarupa Damodara could understand that the fisherman had caught Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in his net. Since the fisherman was afraid of being haunted by a ghost, Svarupa Damodara gave him a slap and chanted Hare Krsna.
- Suddenly Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu returned to external consciousness and said to Svarupa Damodara Gosvami, "My dear Svarupa, please sing some sweet songs."
- When they saw this, Svarupa Damodara Gosvami and all the other devotees began to chant the holy name of Krsna very loudly into Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's ear.
Conclusion
Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī is the key to entering the inner chamber of the Lord's pastimes. As the Lord's intimate secretary, he protected the Lord's mood, recorded His words, and trained the next generation of Gosvāmīs. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that all Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas who follow the cult of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are strictly subordinate to the authority of Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī.
