Caitanya's Chanting - The Inauguration of Saṅkīrtana
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is described in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam as kṛṣṇa-varṇam, meaning He is Kṛṣṇa Himself, and also that He is always chanting the name of Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord appeared in this age to personally demonstrate the process of saṅkīrtana-yajña. His chanting was not a mere ritual but a profound expression of transcendental love that transformed the hearts of all who heard the vibration.
Obedience to the Spiritual Master
Lord Caitanya's commitment to chanting began with the order of His spiritual master, Iśvara Purī. Playing the role of a student, the Lord was told that He was a "fool" and unqualified for the study of Vedānta. Instead, He was instructed to always chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. By strictly following this order, the Lord showed that chanting is the essence of all Vedic hymns and the only path to perfection in Kali-yuga.
- According to the calculations of the spiritual master, Lord Caitanya appeared to be a fool; therefore he said that He should not indulge in the study of Vedanta but should continue chanting the Hare Krsna mantra. Lord Caitanya strictly obeyed this order.
- Caitanya replied: My spiritual master told Me, Just go on chanting this Hare Krsna mantra: it will make You all-perfect.
- Lord Caitanya told Prakasananda Sarasvati that because He received the order from His spiritual master, He was constantly chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
- I firmly believe in these words of My spiritual master, and therefore I always chant the holy name of the Lord, alone and in the association of devotees.
The Ecstatic Madness of Love
Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Lord Caitanya’s chanting frequently led Him into a state of "transcendental madness." He would laugh, cry, and dance uncontrollably, sometimes fainting for hours. When He questioned His spiritual master about this "madness," he was told that such symptoms are the actual result of successful chanting and indicate the awakening of ecstatic love for God.
- "As a result of this chanting," the Lord (Caitanya) said, "I sometimes become very impatient and cannot restrain Myself from dancing and laughing or crying and singing. Indeed, I become just like a madman.
- My dear lord, what kind of mantra have you given Me? I have become mad simply by chanting this maha-mantra.
- While chanting the holy name of the Lord in pure ecstasy, I lose Myself, and thus I laugh, cry, dance and sing just like a madman.
- By chanting the holy name, Lord Caitanya continued, I became almost mad.
Universal Influence on All Beings
The potency of Lord Caitanya's chanting was so immense that it affected even the animals and the trees. While traveling through the Jharikhaṇḍa forest, the Lord's chanting of the holy names inspired tigers, elephants, and deer to dance in ecstasy. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that this universal effect depends on the purity of the chanter, and Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s chanting was devoid of all offenses.
- When Caitanya was passing through the jungles of South India some five hundred years ago, He chanted Hare Krsna, and all the animals - the tigers, elephants and deer - joined Him in dancing to the holy names. Of course this depends on the purity of the chanting.
- When the Lord loudly chanted "Haribol!" the trees and creepers became jubilant to hear Him.
- Whoever heard Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu chant "Hari! Hari!" also chanted the holy name of Lord Hari and Krsna. In this way they all followed the Lord, very eager to see Him.
- You have loudly chanted the Hare Krsna mantra, and everyone, moving or not moving, has benefited by hearing it.
Chanting in Solitude and Association
Lord Caitanya demonstrated that chanting should be performed both in congregation (saṅkīrtana) and in solitude. During the day, He would often sit in a solitary place near the Godāvarī river or beneath a tamarind tree in Vṛndāvana to chant. At night, He would taste the transcendental bliss of the holy name in the company of His intimate associates like Svarūpa Dāmodara and Rāmānanda Rāya.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would go to Vrndavana and sit in a solitary place, where He would chant the holy name until noon.
- After taking a bath on the banks of the Godavari, the Lord sat near the bank and began chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
- Thus in the association of Svarupa Damodara and Raya Ramananda, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu passed His days and nights chanting and hearing with great pleasure.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu remained awake throughout the entire night, chanting the Hare Krsna mantra very loudly.
Chanting the Names of the Gopīs
A unique aspect of Lord Caitanya's chanting was His chanting of the names of the gopīs. This bewildered neophyte students and even led to some misunderstanding. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord was in the mood of Rādhārāṇī, and for Him, chanting the names of Kṛṣṇa's most intimate devotees was as good as—or even more potent than—chanting the Lord's name directly.
- A student or neophyte devotee could not possibly understand why Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was chanting the name of the gopis, nor should the student have asked the Lord about the potency of chanting gopi gopi.
- Lord Caitanya was once chanting the holy names of the gopis when His students criticized Him: "Why are You chanting the names of the gopis? Why not 'Krsna'?"
- Since Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu chanted the names of the gopis, worship of the gopis or the devotees of the Lord is as good as devotional service rendered directly to the Lord.
- Out of sheer foolishness the disciples of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked the Lord why He was chanting the names of the gopis and advised Him to chant the name of Krsna.
The Perfection and Potency of Chanting
Lord Caitanya taught that chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra is the only means of deliverance from material contamination. He declared that it can make a person "all-perfect" and remove all misconceptions of the material world. By His personal example, He showed that one should always be happy in chanting and that this practice still holds its original potency today.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra must be understood to be devoid of all offenses.
- Caitanya said: I firmly believe that simply chanting the holy name of the Lord can remove all misconceptions of the material world. I believe that simply by chanting the holy name of the Lord one can attain the shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord.
- By His personal behavior, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu showed that He was never distressed but always happy in chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. One should follow in the footsteps of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and engage constantly in chanting the maha-mantra.
- The Krsna consciousness movement that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu started by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra still has its potency. Therefore people should understand it seriously and scientifically and spread it all over the world.
Conclusion
Lord Caitanya's chanting is the foundation of the modern Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. We chant Hare Kṛṣṇa because He personally chanted it and recommended it for all. By following in His footprints and accepting the order of the spiritual master with full faith, any conditioned soul can taste the "sweet nectar" of the holy name and attain the highest platform of spiritual existence—uninterrupted love for Kṛṣṇa.
