Bhakti-śāstrī Degree and Examination
Śrīla Prabhupāda introduced the Bhakti-śāstrī degree and examination system to encourage the systematic study of Vedic literatures among his disciples. He viewed this academic qualification not merely as a scholarly pursuit, but as a necessary foundation for spiritual life, ensuring that devotees, especially those seeking brahminical initiation, possessed a deep and accurate understanding of the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
Curriculum and Essential Books
Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly defined the syllabus for the Bhakti-śāstrī degree, emphasizing the importance of specific texts. He instructed that students must carefully read books such as Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, The Nectar of Devotion, and The Nectar of Instruction to fully grasp the science of bhakti before appearing for the examination.
- Whatever books we have got, it should be studied. Bhakti-sastri means Nectar of Devotion, Bhagavad-gita, Nectar of Instruction, Beyond Death -- in this way we select some ten books. That is bhakti-sastri.
- It is very important (The Nectar of Instruction) and must be immediately read by all devotees. In the near future we shall introduce the Bhakti-sastri examination for second initiation and this shall be one of the required books of study.
- Now read Bhagavad-gita very carefully, we will have examination next time. From Bhagavad-gita start our Bhakti Shastri.
Prerequisite for Brāhmaṇa Initiation
To maintain high standards within the society, Śrīla Prabhupāda established the rule that passing the Bhakti-śāstrī examination would be a mandatory requirement for second initiation. He explained that while the first initiation is open to everyone for purification through chanting, the second initiation requires a thorough philosophical understanding of bhakti.
- From next year, unless one passes bhakti-sastri, he cannot be second initiated. First initiation is open for everyone. "Come on. Chant Hare Krsna." That will purify him. Then let him understand what is bhakti.
- Soon we shall be instituting Bhakti-sastri examinations and all brahmanas will have to pass. So utilize whatever time you find to make a thorough study of my books. Then all your questions will be answered.
- The idea is that anyone, after studying the books, who wants to gain the title of Bhakti-sastri, can take the exam. This is academic. Just like a brahmana with sastric knowledge and a brahmana without. It is optional - one who wants may take.
Examination Schedule and Certification
Śrīla Prabhupāda arranged for examinations to be held annually, often coinciding with significant festivals like Janmāṣṭamī or the annual gatherings in Māyāpur. He personally oversaw the initial examinations and issued certificates to those who successfully demonstrated their knowledge, conferring upon them the title of Bhakti-śāstrī.
- FIRST YEAR BHAKTISASTRI EXAMINATION, September 4th, 1969. Time: 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. Janmastami Ceremony - I shall personally examine the papers, and those who will pass will be sent a certificate of Bhaktisastri in due course.
- Every one of you should very carefully read. Every one of you must have one book and read it carefully and appear in the examination next Janmastami. You'll get designation, Bhakti-sastri.
- I hereby certify that my initiated disciple, Sriman Upendra Das Adhikari (Wayne Phillip Gunderson), having successfully completed his course of divinity studies in the International Society for Krsna Consciousness has been awarded the degree of Bhakti-sastri (Minister).
Titles and Academic Progression
The Bhakti-śāstrī degree was envisioned by Śrīla Prabhupāda as the first step in a broader system of spiritual education. He outlined a hierarchy of titles—Bhakti-śāstrī, Bhakti-vaibhava, Bhaktivedanta, and Bhakti-sārvabhauma—to encourage devotees to continue their studies and deepen their realization of the scriptures throughout their lives.
- Bhakti-sastri, Bhakti-vaibhava, Bhaktivedanta, and Bhakti-sarvabhauma. All our brahmanas and anyone wanting to become brahmana, will have to sit for examination once a year at Mayapur.
- You should read all these books and appear in the next year examination. Just like this year, so many boys have appeared. They're going to get the title Bhakti-sastri. So utilize you life.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda established the Bhakti-śāstrī degree as a cornerstone of the educational culture within his movement. By requiring deep study and formal examination, he ensured that his disciples, particularly those acting as brāhmaṇas and preachers, were well-equipped with the philosophical conclusions of the Vedic literatures. This system was designed to protect the integrity of the teachings and to empower devotees to effectively present Kṛṣṇa consciousness to the world.
