Arcanam - The Science of Deity Worship
In the vast science of bhakti-yoga, there are nine primary methods of engaging with the Supreme. Among them, arcanam—the worship of the Deity—holds a vital place. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that arcanam provides the devotee with a tangible way to serve the Lord with the senses. By bathing, dressing, and feeding the Deity form of Kṛṣṇa, the devotee purifies their existence and realizes the personal nature of God.
The Nine Processes of Bhakti
Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently cites the verse from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (7.5.23) that outlines the nine limbs of devotion: śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ smaraṇaṁ pāda-sevanam arcanaṁ vandanaṁ dāsyaṁ sakhyam ātma-nivedanam. Arcanam is the fifth process. While śravaṇam (hearing) and kīrtanam (chanting) are the foundation, arcanam allows for direct personal service.
- In bhakti-yoga it is recommended that a devotee follow nine principles; sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam/ arcanam. vandanam dasyam sakhyam atma-nivedanam - Shrimad Bhagavatam 7.5.23.
- The direct method of getting liberation from material bondage is devotional service, comprising the nine following methods: sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam arcanam vandanam dasyam sakhyam atma-nivedanam.
- A pure devotee is always transcendentally situated because of executing nine different processes of bhakti-yoga - sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam/ arcanam vandanam dasyam sakhyam atma-nivedanam - Shrimad Bhagavatam 7.5.23.
What is Arcanam?
Arcanam specifically refers to the worship of the śrī-vigraha (the Deity). Śrīla Prabhupāda distinguishes arcanam from vandanam (prayer). While many religious traditions, such as Christianity and Islam, practice vandanam, arcanam is unique to the Vedic path where the Lord is worshiped in His specific form. This worship involves engaging the senses in practical service: cleaning the temple, offering food, and performing ārati.
- Arcanam means worshiping Lord Visnu as one does in the temple, and vandanam means offering respectful obeisances. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru (Bhagavad Gita 18.65). Vandanam means namaskuru - offering obeisances or offering prayers.
- Deity worship is arcanam, chanting is vandanam, and dasyam is working for Krsna and spreading this Krsna consciousness movement.
- Although the Christians and Muhammadans do not worship the Deity, they offer prayers to the Lord, and that is also bhakti. Arcanam vandanam.
- These are the process of devotional service, that we worship the Deity, sri-vigraha, nicely dressed, nicely worshiped, first-class food offered. This is called sri-vigraharadhana, worshiping, arcanam.
The Necessity of Guidance
Unlike spontaneous feeling, arcanam follows strict rules and regulations known as pāñcarātrika-vidhi. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that one cannot perform arcanam whimsically. It requires taking shelter of a bona fide spiritual master who teaches the disciple how to perform the worship cleanly and punctually.
- Arcanam. After pada-sevanam comes the process of arcanam, worship of the Deity. If one is interested in the process of arcanam, one must positively take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master and learn the process from him.
- Bhagavata-vidhi includes preaching work - sravanam kirtanam visnoh (Shrimad Bhagavatam 7.5.23) - the hearing and chanting of the glories of Lord Visnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The pancaratrika-vidhi includes arcanam vandanam dasyam sakhyam atma-niv.
Ideal for Householders
Śrīla Prabhupāda specifically recommends arcanam for householders. While sannyāsīs may focus on preaching and traveling, householders can turn their home into a temple by installing Deities. By engaging their hard-earned money in worshiping the Lord with ingredients like flowers, incense, and food, the entire family becomes purified.
- A householder should endeavor to earn money for the execution of bhakti-yoga-sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam/ arcanam vandanam dasyam sakhyam atma-nivedanam.
- All the members of the household should be engaged in the daily service of the Lord, beginning from morning (4 a.m.) till night (10 p.m.) by performing mangala-aratrika, niranjana, arcana, puja, kirtana, srngara, bhoga-vaikali, sandhya-aratrika, etc.
- Pada-sevanam: Laksmi, goddess of fortune, simply engaged herself in massaging the lotus feet of Visnu. Pada-sevanam. Arcanam: Prthu Maharaja, he engaged himself in the arcana. Vandanam. Dasyam: Hanuman. Akrura, Akrura, he simply offered prayers to Krsna.
Conclusion
Arcanam is the training ground for spiritual love. By regulated worship of the Deity, the devotee's heart is cleansed of material dirt. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that if one faithfully executes arcanam along with the other processes, one will eventually attain the stage of ātma-nivedanam—full surrender—and spontaneous love for Kṛṣṇa.
