Ārādhana - The Essence of Worship
The Sanskrit word ārādhana translates to "worship." However, in the theology of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, it signifies much more than simple ritual. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that ārādhana is the active principle of the relationship between the soul and the Supreme Lord. Whether it is the formal worship of Lord Viṣṇu or the intimate loving affairs of Vṛndāvana, ārādhana is the means by which the devotee approaches the Lord.
Viṣṇu-ārādhana: The Supreme Worship
Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently cites the statement of Lord Śiva from the Padma Purāṇa: ārādhanānāṁ sarveṣāṁ viṣṇor ārādhanaṁ param. "Of all types of worship, the worship of Lord Viṣṇu is the best." In the material world, people worship many demigods and powerful figures, but the perfection of worship is reached only when it is directed toward the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This viṣṇu-ārādhana includes offering obeisances, thinking of Him, and becoming His devotee.
- In the material way of life visnu-upasana has been recommended as the highest. Aradhananam param devi visnor aradhanam param. It is the statement of Lord Siva to Parvati that, - Of all aradhana, visnu-aradhanam is the best.
- After studying the Vedas, one must then execute devotional service by thinking always of the Supreme Lord (man-mana), becoming His devotee, worshiping Him and always offering Him obeisances. This is called visnu-aradhana.
- One should please them by offering them clothing, ornaments and cows. This is the ceremony called visnu-aradhana, or worship of Lord Visnu.
The Secret of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī
The most profound definition of ārādhana is found in the name of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that "Rādhā" is derived from the root ārādhana. She is the one who worships Kṛṣṇa best. Śrīla Prabhupāda addresses the criticism that Her name is not found in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam by explaining that Her name is hidden in the word ārādhita (worshiped). Because She worships Lord Govinda better than anyone else, She is the personification of ārādhana.
- Radharani, the name has come from the word aradhyate, aradhana means worshiping.
- Her worship (aradhana) consists of fulfilling the desires of Lord Krsna. Therefore the Puranas call Her Radhika.
- Sometimes people cannot understand why Radhika's name is not mentioned in Srimad-Bhagavatam. Actually, however, Radhika can be understood from the word aradhana, which indicates that She enjoys the highest loving affairs with Krsna.
- The name "Radha" is derived from the root word aradhana, which means "worship." The personality who excels all in worshiping Krsna may therefore be called Radhika, the greatest servitor.
Worshiping the Deity (Śrī-Vigraha)
In practical terms for the conditioned soul, ārādhana means the worship of the arcā-vigraha (Deity form). This is the path of the ācāryas. Śrīla Prabhupāda instructs that one should be engaged twenty-four hours a day in this worship—cleansing the temple, dressing the Deity, and decorating Him. This constant engagement purifies the senses and fixes the mind on the Lord.
- This deity is called sri-vigraha. Aradhana: worshiping the sri-vigraha. Decorating, cleansing the temple, tan-mandira-marjanadau. So we can engage our bodily activities in that way.
- This arca-murti, sri-vigraha, aradhanam, you should worship. This is the acarya-pantha. This is the parampara. So this worship is going on under this parampara system. It is not manufactured. What the acarya says, if you follow, then you become perfect.
- You should have such program for worshiping the Deity that you may be engaged twenty-four hours, twenty-four hours. Sri-vigraharadhana-nitya, nitya-nana, nitya-nana-srngara, dressing, decorating. Daily, new dress, or twice new dress, or four times.
Conclusion
Ārādhana is the bridge between the devotee and the Lord. Whether through the external worship of the Deity or the internal cultivation of the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, the goal is the same: to please Kṛṣṇa. As Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches, without ārādhana, there is no question of spiritual advancement.
