Caitanya's Quoting - The Authority of Scripture
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu set the perfect example for all spiritual teachers by constantly referencing the revealed scriptures. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that although the Lord is the author of all Vedas, He never claimed authority based on His own personality while playing the role of a devotee. Instead, He substantiated every point of His philosophy by quoting from the śāstra. This establishes the standard for the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement: we do not manufacture our own ways, but strictly follow the authorized path.
The Principle of Authorized Knowledge
The primary reason Lord Caitanya quoted scripture was to teach that spiritual knowledge must be authoritative. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Lord did not invent the saṅkīrtana movement; He quoted the Bṛhan-nāradīya Purāṇa to prove that chanting the holy name is the only way for deliverance in Kali-yuga. By quoting valid sources, He ensured that people could accept His teachings without doubt.
- Caitanya is not recommending this process (chanting the holy name of Krsna) by manufacturing Himself, but He is quoting from the authorized scripture and authorized sources so that people can accept it.
- He (Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu) quoted the following verse from the Brhan-naradiya Purana (38.126) to confirm His statement - that the most important item is the chanting of the holy names of the Lord - Hare Krsna maha-mantra.
- Sridhara Svami was accepted by Lord Caitanya as an authorized commentator on Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Caitanya Mahaprabhu quoted his writings.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu quoted his (Sridhara Svami's) writings and explained that in the Tenth Canto of Bhagavatam the life and activities of Krsna are described because Krsna is the shelter of all manifestations.
Establishing the Absolute Truth
Lord Caitanya quoted extensively to define the nature of the Absolute Truth against the misconceptions of the Māyāvādīs. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the Lord quoted the Padma Purāṇa to expose the hidden purpose of Śaṅkarācārya and used the Viṣṇu Purāṇa to establish that all energies—material and spiritual—emanate from the Supreme Person. He also cited the Brahma-saṁhitā to describe the unlimited nature of the spiritual world.
- Lord Caitanya quoted a verse from the Padma Purana (62.31) in which it is stated that the Lord ordered Mahadeva, Lord Siva, to present some imaginary interpretations of Vedic literatures in order to divert people from the actual purpose of the Vedas.
- Lord Caitanya quoted from Visnu Purana (1.3.2) to the effect that all inconceivable energies reside in the Supreme Personality of the Lord and that the whole cosmic manifestation acts due to the Lord's inconceivable energy.
- Lord Caitanya quotes one important verse from Bs: "I worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by whose personal effulgence the unlimited brahmajyoti is manifested. In that brahmajyoti there are innumerable universes, and each is filled with innumerable planets - Bs 5.40.
- Lord Caitanya quotes the verse from Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.11: Those who are knowers of the Absolute Truth describe the Absolute Truth in three features as impersonal Brahman, localized all-pervading Supersoul, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna.
Instructing the Devotees
When instructing His disciples, Lord Caitanya used scriptural verses to delineate the science of devotion. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that He quoted the Bhagavad-gītā to Sanātana Gosvāmī to explain the entanglement of the material modes and the liberation of the surrendered soul. He also used verses to establish proper Vaiṣṇava etiquette, such as the danger of associating with non-devotees.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu quotes the verse from Bhagavad-gita: The divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it - Bhagavad-Gita 7.14.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu quoted from the Seventh Chapter of Bhagavad-gita in which it is stated that earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and ego all combine together to form the inferior energy of the Supreme Lord.
- Lord Caitanya quotes a verse from Katyayana-samhita: One should rather tolerate the miseries of being locked in a cage filled with fire than associate with those who are not devotees of the Lord.
- Caitanya quoted: One who is transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman. He never laments nor desires to have anything; he is equally disposed to every living entity. In that state he attains pure devotional service - Bhagavad-Gita 18.54.
Quoting in Ecstasy
For Lord Caitanya, quoting scripture was not just an intellectual exercise; it was an expression of divine love. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord, absorbed in the mood of the gopīs, would wander through the forests of Vṛndāvana, quoting verses to the trees and asking for Kṛṣṇa. He also quoted the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam to describe the symptoms of the bhāva stage and the transformative power of the Lord's aroma.
- Absorbed in the ecstatic mood of the gopis, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu wandered here and there. He began to inquire after Krsna by quoting verses to all the trees and creepers.
- Caitanya quoted a sloka from Srimad-Bhagavatam (Srimad Bhagavatam 3.15.43) dealing with the Kumaras. When the Kumaras entered the temple, they were attracted by the aroma of flowers and tulasi leaves offered to the lotus feet of the Lord with pulp of sandalwood.
- Caitanya quoted a verse from second Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam (Srimad Bhagavatam 2.1.9) in which Sukadeva Gosvami admits that although he was elevated to the liberated stage and free from the clutches of maya, he was still attracted by the transcendental pastimes of Krsna.
- All the descriptions of the bhava stage of devotional service were quoted by Lord Caitanya to Sanatana Gosvami. Lord Caitanya next proceeded to describe the symptoms of actual love for Krsna.
Conclusion
By constantly quoting from the scriptures, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu demonstrated that there is no need to invent new paths or philosophies. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches us that the perfection of life is found in the ancient verses of the Vedas, and that a true devotee always speaks on the authority of the Lord and His previous ācāryas.
