Characteristics of Sincere Students
The path of spiritual advancement is paved with the sincerity of the disciple. Śrīla Prabhupāda outlines that a sincere student is one who approaches the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness with faith, discipline, and an eagerness to hear. Such a student is not judged by their material pedigree but by their willingness to submit to the instructions of the spiritual master and the Supreme Lord.
Hearing and Following Instructions
The foundation of a student's life is the reception of knowledge through the ear. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a sincere student receives the holy name from the spiritual master and maintains the potency of that initiation by following the regulative principles. Furthermore, they do not avoid difficult philosophical topics but engage with them to strengthen their conviction.
- A sincere student aurally receives the holy name from the spiritual master, and after being initiated he follows the regulative principles. When the holy name is properly served in this way, automatically the spiritual nature of the holy name spreads.
- A sincere student should not neglect the discussion of such conclusions, considering them controversial, for such discussions strengthen the mind. Thus one's mind becomes attached to Sri Krsna.
- The sincere student should have a firm respect for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Such a student was Arjuna. BG 1972 Introduction.
Transcendent Qualification
In the material world, students are often judged by their academic grades or family background. However, in the science of God, these external designations are meaningless. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that a sincere student is not concerned with the caste or social status of the spiritual master, nor does the student need a "fertile brain" to find God. The only requirement is sincerity.
- Lord Caitanya clearly showed that a sincere student never cares whether his spiritual master is born in a high brahmana family or ksatriya family, or whether he is a sannyasi, brahmacari or whatever.
- The Lord is not to be found simply by education or by a good fertile brain, but surely He can be found by the sincere student through the transparent medium of the bona fide spiritual master.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam is so scientifically presented that any sincere student of this great science will be able to understand the science of God simply by reading it with attention or simply by regularly hearing it from the bona fide speaker.
Divine Guidance and Revelation
The result of sincere studentship is the receipt of mercy from both the Guru and Kṛṣṇa. This is known as guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpā. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that for such a student, the Lord gives instruction from within the heart, and the spiritual master gives instruction from without. Through this dual guidance, the contents of the scriptures are spiritually revealed.
- To a sincere student, all of the contents of these books become revealed from within, even if he has not thoroughly studied them all.
- That is the position; both ways a sincere student is instructed, which is called Guru-Krsna kripa. Simply you have to receive it properly and execute it orderly.
- So when we sincerely want Krsna, then Krsna sends His representative, guru. Guru is outside representative of Krsna. So to the sincere student, Krsna teaches from inside and outside.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the sincere student is the eligible candidate for returning back to home, back to Godhead. By depending on the mercy of the spiritual master and engaging in the chanting of the holy names, the student develops a genuine attachment to Kṛṣṇa, proving that spiritual perfection is accessible to anyone who approaches the process with a sincere heart.
