Joining Kṛṣṇa in His Eternal Transcendental Pastimes
Lord Kṛṣṇa’s appearance in this material world is described by Śrīla Prabhupāda as a transcendental invitation to all living entities. The Lord descends from His eternal abode to display His magnificent pastimes in Vṛndāvana, showing the conditioned souls the beauty of spiritual life and urging them to return to their original position. Joining Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate goal of the jīva, and it is achieved not through material effort, but through a transformation of consciousness and the cultivation of pure, unalloyed devotion.
An Invitation to the Eternal Dance
The primary purpose of Kṛṣṇa's descent to Vṛndāvana is to attract the forgetful living entities back to the spiritual world. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Kṛṣṇa is enjoying eternally with His associates, and He invites us to leave our material miseries to join Him in His dance. This participation is available to anyone who qualifies themselves through Kṛṣṇa consciousness. By simply changing our consciousness to realize that we belong to Kṛṣṇa, we can join Him immediately in spirit, eventually attaining His direct company in the spiritual sky.
- Krsna comes personally on this planet to show His enjoyment life in Vrndavana - that place is Vrndavana; therefore Vrndavana is so important - to invite us that, Why you are rotting here? Come with Me and join with My dance.
- Krsna is dancing with the gopis. He is enjoying eternally. So you can join with Him. That information we are giving. Just imagine what a valuable service we are rendering.
- We are part of Krsna; we must join Krsna. And you can join Krsna immediately by your consciousness, simply by thinking, "I am Krsna's, Krsna is mine:" That's all.
- You can join with Krsna and dance with Him. Why you are forgetting that? But you have to qualify yourself. You cannot dance with the dog and God at the same time.
Childhood Pastimes and Cowherd Friends
The cowherd boys of Vrajabhūmi are highly elevated souls who have attained the privilege of joining Kṛṣṇa in His daily activities. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how hundreds of thousands of boys would emerge from their homes to join Kṛṣṇa in the pasturing grounds, carrying their calves before them. Whether they were stealing butter together or playing on the banks of the Yamunā, these friends were constantly enthused by Kṛṣṇa's chivalrous presence. These associates descend with the Lord from the spiritual world specifically to facilitate and join in His transcendental play.
- Hundreds and thousands of cowherd boys came out of their respective homes in Vrajabhumi and joined Krsna, keeping before them their hundreds and thousands of groups of calves - SB 10.12.2.
- When Krsna and Balarama were in the forest, mother Yasoda used to send Them some fruits, sweetmeats and rice mixed with yogurt. Krsna would take them, sit down on a slab of stone on the bank of the Yamuna, and call His friends to join Him.
- Bhadrasena therefore left the party of Balarama and joined Krsna, and he agitated his friends as much as the Mandara Hill had agitated the whole ocean. By his roaring sounds he deafened all his friends, and he enthused Krsna with his chivalrous activities.
- In their childhood pastimes, all these cowherd boys joined with Krsna in stealing butter. But rather than become angry, Mother Yasoda became wet from the milk flowing out of her breasts.
Conjugal Love of the Gopīs
Joining Kṛṣṇa in the rāsa dance represents the pinnacle of spiritual achievement. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this keli performance—directly attaching oneself to the Lord in conjugal love—requires the merit of many millions of pious births, known as kṛta-puṇya-puñjāḥ. For those gopīs who were physically unable to join the dance, their intense absorption in Kṛṣṇa through the mood of separation allowed them to give up their material bodies and join Him at His lotus feet. This shows that the internal absorption of the heart is the quickest and most potent way to join the Lord's most confidential pastimes.
- To join with the rasa dance of Krsna, or to play with Krsna as cowherd boy, it requires krta-punya-punjah, many, many millions of births' pious activities.
- At the time of the rasa dance those gopis who could not join Him gave up their bodies simply by thinking of Him. Absorption in Krsna consciousness by feeling separation is thus the quickest method for attainment of the lotus feet of Krsna.
- When the gopis assembled to join the rasa dance with Krsna, Krsna left them. Consequently the gopis began to chant the holy name of Krsna and, being overwhelmed with madness, began to inquire about Krsna from the flowers and the creepers in the forest.
- To be directly attached to the Supreme Personality of Godhead in conjugal love is technically called keli. This keli performance means to directly join with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Conjunction of Expansions and Demigods
Whenever Lord Kṛṣṇa appears in His original person, all His plenary portions and expansions join Him through the power of yogamāyā. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that just as Lord Rāmacandra descended with His brothers, so too do the members of the Yadu dynasty and the cowherd men of Vṛndāvana descend with Kṛṣṇa to participate in His transcendental activities. Furthermore, various demigods like Indra and the sun-god also join the Lord to assist in the universal management during His presence on earth. This grand assembly underscores that Kṛṣṇa is the shelter of all plenary parts and the center of all spiritual and material activity.
- When the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna appears, He is the shelter of all plenary parts. Thus at that time all His plenary portions join in Him.
- When an incarnation of Godhead descends on this planet, demigods like the sun-god, the moon-god or the King of heaven, Indra, all join Him. Consequently the incarnation is able to act for the departmental demigods to keep the planetary systems in order.
- Just as Lord Ramacandra descends along with Laksmana and Bharata, an expansion of Sankarsana, so the members of the Yadu dynasty and the cowherd men of Vrndavana also descend with Lord Krsna in order to join in the transcendental pastimes of the Lord.
- When Krsna appears, all the Visnu expansions join with Him.
Conclusion
Joining Kṛṣṇa in His eternal transcendental pastimes is the natural constitutional position of every living entity. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, the Lord’s descent is a clarion call for us to awaken from our material slumber and join the eternal festivities of Vṛndāvana. Whether one joins as a friend, a servant, or an associate in the rāsa dance, the requirement is the same: the purification of consciousness. By following the footsteps of the residents of Vraja and understanding that we belong solely to Kṛṣṇa, we can transcend the reactions of karma and secure our place in the Lord’s eternal, blissful pastimes.
