Jagannātha Purī, also known as Nīlācala, served as the headquarters for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu during the final twenty-four years of His manifest pastimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that after accepting the renounced order of life (sannyāsa) at the age of twenty-four, the Lord moved to Purī upon the request of His mother, Śacīmātā. This sacred dhāma became the stage for His most confidential pastimes of ecstatic love in separation from Kṛṣṇa.
The Two Phases of Residence
Śrīla Prabhupāda divides the Lord's time in Purī into two distinct periods. For the first six years, although based in Purī, He traveled extensively to South India, Vṛndāvana, and Bengal to preach and deliver the fallen souls. For the remaining eighteen years, He stayed continuously in Jagannātha Purī, never leaving the district, and focused on tasting the mellows of devotional service.
- After taking sannyasa at the age of twenty-four, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu lived another twenty-four years. For six of these years, He traveled extensively throughout India, sometimes going to Jagannatha Puri and sometimes leaving.
- After traveling for six years, the Lord fixed His residence at Jagannatha Puri and stayed there for the eighteen remaining years of His life. During these eighteen years He mainly chanted Hare Krsna with His devotees.
- I (Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami) have thus given a summary description of the madhya-lila, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's travels to and from Jagannatha Puri. Indeed, the Lord traveled to and fro continuously for six years.
Daily Pastimes and Ecstasy
During His stay, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's life was a constant flow of transcendental bliss. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord would visit the Jagannātha temple daily, viewing the Deity with the same intense emotion the gopīs felt when seeing Kṛṣṇa at Kurukṣetra. He would perform kīrtana for hours and bathe in the sea with His devotees. At night, He would taste the confidential meanings of scripture in the company of Svarūpa Dāmodara and Rāmānanda Rāya.
- During the day He chanted, danced and saw Lord Jagannatha in the temple. At night He tasted transcendental bliss in the company of Ramananda Raya and Svarupa Damodara.
- At those times, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would visit Lord Jagannatha. Then His feelings exactly corresponded to those of the gopis when they saw Krsna at Kuruksetra after long separation. Krsna had come to Kuruksetra with His brother and sister to visit.
- While Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu stayed at Jagannatha Puri, He constantly enjoyed chanting and dancing with His devotees.
The Gathering of Devotees
Jagannātha Purī became the meeting place for all the Lord's associates. Every year, devotees from Bengal would travel to Purī to spend the four months of the rainy season (Cāturmāsya) with the Lord. They would participate in the Ratha-yātrā festival, bringing news from Bengal and enjoying the Lord's association. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that permanent residents like Haridāsa Ṭhākura, Paramānanda Purī, and Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī served Him constantly.
- All the devotees from Bengal gradually began arriving at Jagannatha Puri. At this time, the residents of Kulina-grama also came to see Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu for the first time.
- During those eighteen years, all the devotees of Bengal used to visit Him at Jagannatha Puri every year. They would remain there for four continuous months and enjoy the company of the Lord.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu remained at Jagannatha Puri, Nilacala, with Paramananda Puri, Jagadananda, Svarupa Damodara, Damodara Pandita, Govinda and Kasisvara. It was Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's daily practice to see Lord Jagannatha in the morning.
Mood of Separation
The theological significance of the Lord's residence in Purī lies in His adoption of the mood of separation (vipralambha). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that just as Rādhārāṇī felt intense separation from Kṛṣṇa, Lord Caitanya exhibited these same symptoms. He taught that serving Kṛṣṇa in separation is the highest form of perfection, as it intensifies the love of the devotee.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, in His last twelve years of existence within this world at Jagannatha Puri, taught the people of the world how, with a feeling of separation, one can develop His dormant love of Krsna.
- The six Gosvamis were so much enriched with the gopis’ feelings of separation that they enjoyed transcendental pleasure at every moment. Similarly, when Lord Caitanya was at Jagannatha Puri, He was in the role of Radharani, feeling separation from Krsna.
- While thus living at Jagannatha Puri, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu floated all day and night in an ocean of separation from Krsna.
King Pratāparudra's Service
The King of Orissa, Pratāparudra, played a crucial role in facilitating the Lord's stay. Although Lord Caitanya initially refused to meet him due to the strict rules of sannyāsa, the King's humble service and eagerness eventually won the Lord's mercy. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the King's dedication, such as his willingness to forgive debts to keep the Lord in his kingdom.
- Prataparudra Maharaja said, "Please endeavor to keep Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu here at Jagannatha Puri, for now He is thinking of going elsewhere."
- When King Prataparudra heard all these details, he felt great pain in his mind. "I shall give up all that is due from Gopinatha Pattanayaka," he said, "if Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu will stay here at Jagannatha Puri."
- Yet despite my great endeavor, the Lord would not agree to see a king. Indeed, He said that if He were asked again, He would quit Jagannatha Puri and go elsewhere.
Conclusion
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's residence in Jagannātha Purī is the crown jewel of His earthly pastimes. It was here that He fully manifested the mood of mahā-bhāva and distributed the most confidential mellows of devotional service. By studying His activities in Purī as presented by Śrīla Prabhupāda, devotees can understand the depth of Kṛṣṇa's love and the path to attaining it.
