Understanding the purpose of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s appearance requires deep spiritual insight. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord’s mission has two distinct features: the external reason, which is to spread the saṅkīrtana movement for the deliverance of the world, and the internal, confidential reason, which is to taste the transcendental mellows of love of God. Additionally, every action of the Lord—from His travels to His dealings with associates—was executed with a specific educational purpose in mind.
The External Mission: Saṅkīrtana
The public purpose of Lord Caitanya’s descent was to establish the yuga-dharma, the religious practice for the Age of Kali. He appeared in a golden complexion to broadcast the glories of the holy name and to unite all living entities under the banner of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that this distribution of love of God, while magnificent, is technically the "secondary" purpose compared to His internal reasons.
- The Lord came to propagate sankirtana. That is an external purpose, as I have already indicated.
- Caitanya appeared in order to distribute love of Krsna and the chanting of His transcendental holy name, Hare Krsna. That was the secondary purpose of Lord Caitanya’s appearance. The real reason is different, as we shall see in this chapter - CC Adi 4.6.
- The religious practice for the Age of Kali is to broadcast the glories of the holy name. Only for this purpose has the Lord, in a yellow color, descended as Lord Caitanya.
- The living entities must get free from the superfluous coverings and fully engage in Krsna consciousness. The purpose of the appearance of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda is to dispel the darkness of the soul.
The Confidential Mission
The deep, internal reasons for Lord Caitanya’s appearance are known only to His most confidential associates. Śrīla Prabhupāda refers to the notes of Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī to reveal that the Lord came to experience the position of His own devotee. When He met with Rāmānanda Rāya, He revealed this secret feature of His personality, which ordinary men cannot comprehend.
- Sri Svarupa Damodara Gosvami was the principal figure among Lord Caitanya's confidential devotees. The records of his diary have revealed these confidential purposes of the Lord.
- "Because you have understood the purpose of My incarnation, you are privileged to have seen this particular feature of My personality," the Lord said to Ramananda Raya.
- Svarupa Damodara could understand the secret mission of Lord Caitanya, and it was by his grace only that all the devotees of Lord Caitanya could know the real purpose of the Lord.
- You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself; therefore no one can understand Your purpose. By Your mercy You are touching me, although this is not sanctioned by the Vedas.
Teaching Through Example
Lord Caitanya also had specific educational purposes in His dealings with His devotees. He met with Sanātana Gosvāmī in Vārāṇasī specifically to empower him to write books and explain the science of devotion. He punished Junior Haridāsa to set a strict example for renunciants. Even His refusal to discuss Vedānta with the "foolish" was a strategic move to demonstrate that philosophy without devotion is a recreational waste of time.
- The actual purpose of Lord Caitanya's stay at Varanasi after coming back from Vrndavana was to meet Sanatana Gosvami and teach him.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the teacher of the entire world, and therefore He enforced this exemplary punishment (of Junior Haridasa) to establish that illicit sexual connections are never allowed by Vaisnava philosophy.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted to accomplish many purposes through the exegetical endeavors of Srila Sanatana Gosvami.
- Caitanya was neither foolish nor ignorant of the principles of Vedanta. His purpose was to demonstrate to modern society that fools who have no history of penance and austerity should not try to study Vedanta just for some recreational purpose.
The Mystery of His Actions
Sometimes Lord Caitanya’s behavior appeared bewildering, such as fainting or acting like a madman. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that these pastimes had a particular purpose: to show the intensity of love for Kṛṣṇa. However, he warns that while the Lord can do whatever He likes as the Supreme Person, we should understand His purpose but never imitate His behavior.
- Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu's fainting had a particular purpose. As the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He can do whatever He likes and eat whatever He wants, but we should not imitate His pastimes.
- Lord Caitanya’s purpose in His attitude of craziness was to explain that there is nothing within our experience but Krsna consciousness, for everything may be dovetailed with Krsna consciousness.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu then began to walk very swiftly before all the other devotees. No one could understand the real purpose of the two Lords, Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu.
- Unless You (Caitanya) inform us (Haridasa Thakura and Sanatana), we cannot understand what Your purpose is or what You want to do through whom.
Conclusion
The purpose of Lord Caitanya's appearance is comprehensive—ranging from the public distribution of the holy name to the most intimate relish of spiritual emotion. By following in the footsteps of the ācāryas and accepting the words of the Lord, we can begin to appreciate the magnitude of His mercy and the depth of His mission to reclaim the fallen souls.
