The congregational chanting of the holy name (saṅkīrtana) is the life and soul of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava movement, and at the center of this movement is the dancing of Lord Nityānanda. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes Nityānanda Prabhu’s dancing as "uncommon" and completely transcendental. It is so powerful that it floods the world with love of God. The scriptures reveal that this dancing is not just a physical activity but a spiritual performance that attracts the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself.
Attracting Lord Caitanya
The most significant feature of Lord Nityānanda's dancing is that it serves as a magnet for Lord Caitanya. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is always present in four specific places, and one of them is wherever Nityānanda Prabhu is dancing. Even when the Lord is not visible to ordinary eyes, He comes invisibly to relish the sweetness of Nityānanda’s performance. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that while Nityānanda Prabhu could see the Lord watching Him, others could not.
- No one can properly describe the sweetness of Lord Nityananda's dancing. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu personally comes to see it.
- I (Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu) shall also go to see You (Lord Nityananda) at intervals. Keeping Myself invisible, I shall watch You dance.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu always appeared in four places—in the household temple of mother Saci, in the places where Sri Nityananda Prabhu danced, in the house of Srivasa Pandita during congregational chanting, and in the house of Raghava Pandita.
- Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was observing the dancing of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. Nityananda Prabhu could see this, but the others could not.
Inundating the World
Lord Nityānanda is the source of energy for the devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Nityānanda Prabhu would often initiate the dancing in the kīrtana parties, influencing all others to join. Whether forming groups with Advaita Ācārya and Haridāsa Ṭhākura or dancing alone, His movements were incomparable within the three worlds. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord's dancing created an inundation of ecstatic love.
- Lord Nityananda Prabhu first influenced all the devotees to dance, and finally He Himself began dancing, thus inundating the entire world in ecstatic love.
- The dancing of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, like the dancing of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, cannot be compared to anything within these three worlds.
- Seven devotees - Advaita, Nityananda, Haridasa Thakura, Vakresvara, Srivasa Thakura, Raghava Pandita and Gadadhara Pandita - formed seven groups and began dancing. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, chanting "Haribol!" wandered from one group to another.
- When Advaita Acarya began to dance, Nityananda Prabhu began dancing behind Him. Haridasa Thakura, being very pleased, also began dancing behind Him.
Captivating the Devotees
The effect of Nityānanda's dancing on the devotees was profound. Śrīla Prabhupāda recounts the story of Purandara Paṇḍita, who was captivated simply by seeing the Lord's uncommon movements at Khaḍadaha. In another instance, a paṇḍita watching the dancing became so overwhelmed that he jumped from a tree, proclaiming himself to be Angada (a monkey associate of Lord Rāma). These incidents illustrate that Nityānanda's dancing awakens deep spiritual emotions.
- Pandita Purandara met Sri Nityananda Prabhu at Khadadaha. When Nityananda Prabhu visited this village, He danced very uncommonly, and His dancing captivated Purandara Pandita.
- The pandita was in the top of a tree, and upon seeing the dancing of Nityananda he jumped down on the ground and proclaimed himself to be Angada.
The Kīrtana of the Ghoṣa Brothers
Lord Nityānanda had a special affection for the kīrtana performed by the three brothers: Govinda, Mādhava, and Vāsudeva Ghoṣa. Śrīla Prabhupāda mentions that whenever these brothers sang, Nityānanda Prabhu would immediately begin to dance. This confirms the close relationship between sincere kīrtana and the Lord's ecstatic response.
- It is said that when the three brothers (Govinda, Madhava and Vasudeva Ghosa) performed sankirtana, immediately Lord Caitanya and Nityananda would dance in ecstasy.
- Sri Madhava Ghosa was a principal performer of kirtana. While he sang, Nityananda Prabhu danced.
- The three brothers Govinda, Madhava and Vasudeva were the eighty-second, eighty-third and eighty-fourth branches of the tree. Lord Caitanya and Nityananda used to dance in their kirtana performances.
Conclusion
The dancing of Lord Nityānanda is more than just an expression of joy; it is a divine manifestation that attracts the Supreme Lord and purifies the conditioned souls. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that just as Yadunātha Kavicandra always kept Nityānanda dancing in his heart, a sincere devotee should aspire to keep the vision of the Lord's dancing feet within their heart constantly.
